Grand Tokaj
The Grand Tokaj winery, which bears the name of Tokaj, Hungary's most famous wine region, began in 1948, when the Hungarian government decided to establish a company to produce wonderful wines from the Tokaj-Hegyalja wine region, known as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The state-owned company was previously known as Tokaj Kereske dőház, but when it was completely renewed technologically and professionally in 2013, when we switched from mass production to quality production, the name of the farm was also changed to be more suitable for the world conquest. Today, the farm is owned by the Tokaj-Hegyalja University Association. Since 2013, Károly Áts, who was born and raised in the region, has been responsible for the wines of Grand Tokaj, who was first chosen as the winemaker of the year in Hungary in 2012 and in 2020 as the winemaker's winemaker of the year. He is also known as the producer of Tokaj Essencia, which received 100 points from Wine & Spirit Magazine.
The Tokaj-Hegyalja wine region is known for its volcanic soil, its continuous sunshine well into autumn, and the fog brought to the area by the Bodrog river. There are up to 5,500 hectares of vineyards in the area, most of which are focused on the production of sweet wines. Cultivating an area of 67 hectares, the Grand Tokaj winery is the largest in the area, covering up to 35% of the entire area's production, because in addition to its own orchards, it buys grapes from 1,200 small farmers from an area of up to 600-700 hectares. After the renovation in 2014, the cellars of the winery have had room for up to 10 million bottles.
