Cavas Marevia

Enjoying life is respecting life.

The Hevia Ferrer family from Santander has had expertise in the production of quality sparkling wines for over a hundred years, which is why, cherishing the family's entrepreneurial spirit, they decided in 2019 to buy the Cavas Marevia farm in the Requena area. Requena is located in Valencia, which is exceptional as a Cava production area, as the majority of Cava comes from Catalonia and Penedès. In addition to vineyards, the area is known for its almond and olive trees and its beautiful Mediterranean scenery.

What makes it possible to produce high-quality sparkling wines in such a southern location? The Requena area rises on a plateau at an average height of 550-750 meters, which is surrounded by peaks reaching a height of up to a kilometer both in the east and in the north. The temperature differences between night and day are therefore considerable, so the ripening of the grapes during the day stops at night, which also preserves their natural acidity. The continental climate is flavored by the Mediterranean winds, as the area is only 70 kilometers from the sea, enjoying the freshness it brings. Calcareous and clayey soil is poor in nutrients, which is why vines have to fight for their vitality. The average annual temperature is only 13°C, because the winters are long and cold, while the summers are short, dry and hot.

Most of the vineyards grow Macabeo, but several of the producer's cavas also use a lot of Chardonnay, which is suitable for adding acidity and citrus freshness to sparkling wines. Pinot Noir is also grown to some extent. Thanks to the climatic conditions, the nurseries can be cared for with natural methods, as the humidity brought by the proximity of the sea dries quickly during the day. On the other hand, occasional frosts and summer hailstorms cause challenges. Cavas Marevia works closely with up to 100 winegrowers, thanks to which the resources to obtain quality grapes are guaranteed.

In addition to the ecology of the shelters, attention is also paid to energy efficiency. Since 2020, the solar panels operating on the farm have made the producer partly energy self-sufficient. For the producer's environmentally friendly actions, they have also been awarded a Viticulture Sustainability Certificate.
